INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police have ruled the shooting that killed a two-year-old girl on Indy's near northeast side on Friday an accident.

Metro Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl. She was shot on Ralston Avenue and taken to Methodist Hospital, where she died.

The Marion County Coroner's Office has positively identified Harmony Anderson as the victim.

Police said two adults and another young child were with her at the hospital.

Officers found multiple types of guns in the room of the scene. IMPD calls it an unfortunate situation and reminds gun owners to secure their weapons.

“It’s gonna be horrible for the rest of their life. It’s as simple as if you need a gun lock, get a free gun lock. The Marion County Public Libraries have them for free. Many guns come with locks. We’ve got to do better. We have to,” said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson.

IMPD said different guns were left in the home unsecured. Officer Tommy Thompson emotionally asked the community to be more responsible.

“This is devastating. I can’t imagine, and if that other child was on scene, think about that child. How traumatic. They need an outpouring of love regardless of actions; this family needs love,” said Officer Thompson.

Per IMPD, the adults are cooperating and being interviewed by homicide detectives.

This latest tragedy is an example of what can happen when guns are not locked up.

“These same guns get in the hands of juveniles that come to downtown and throughout Indy. We’ve been talking about this for a whole week now. We’ve got to do better about securing guns,” Officer Thompson said.

They’re asking mentors, family members and friends to talk to each other. That plea comes after a mass shooting downtown over the weekend.

“I’m asking and I’m begging that we have a peaceful and safe weekend. That everyone, no matter what neighborhood you’re in,” said IMPD Chief Chris Bailey.

Chief Chris Bailey said officers will strictly enforce the curfew and not tolerate violence.

“Let’s love one another. Look at this precious life. We only have one and give it grace and meaning that it deserves,” said Chief Bailey.
